Dear Administrators

could you please tell us why the old message boared is not working, if your fixing it, and when will it be back. It is a very beloved and important site to many people here and others wondering elsewhere where the board may be. So some answers would be nice.

Thank you,

WHY IS RUFUS A MUSICAL GENIUS? YOUR OPINION?

It rained in central park
on an artist I only just knew
and who I will never meet.
He was nervous and played like an angel.
I broke my voice and sang out loud as if though I could sing.
And I did, but cried inside for I could possibly never meet him. A man embraced by many hearts, and did he say he wanted to sell records. How whimsical; when he makes grown men cry as they embrace their girlfriends. He complained about the rain while I rejoiced my tears.
An artist as it poured between the leaves onto open spaces. How I wish he would have a drink with me to discuss the passion that would never be understood. Why I don't love yet cry at the elegies. Why I don't kiss and love just everyone.
Life is my mystery. Circumstances some strange misery. How I wish I could dance on the piano with my gentle fingers as he does. How I wish I could wear the red lipstick and have the boys dance as he did. He may be Judy cause he can. But how I could be me when he sings. It rained then while I wore my poncho and listened to him. I danced in my head for 90 minutes in Central Park where it rained. He hoped for it to stop, my artist, the rain, but it poured on our heads. And we sang. I sang. How could I meet him when I'm just one listening in the crowd. Who would read this? And understand. Cry and listen forever.

How many musical instruments can Rufus play?

With all the different instruments he's got in his compositions, I am just wondering how many he can actually play in addition to the piano and guitar?

Rufusized!

Well while lurking on Urban Dictionary, I came across this:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Rufusized

RUFUSIZED: Forced against one's will to listen to the work of Rufus Wainwright.

I found it humerous :) Urban Dictionary also has amazing entries onn Rufus himself: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Rufus+Wainwright

Just something to preoccupy your time :D

Word Dawg, aka The Tower of Learning

The music is of course delicious but what about RW-speak, his wordsmithery? How many other pop writers introduce you to new words? I see now how untutored I was before entering the world of Rufus: I had no idea how to sew a bee-line or polish a cabriolet.

I'm still in the dark with Fuggi Regal Fantisima, though. Can any Latinists out there let the spotlight shine?

(With apologies to Crazystairs whose coinage it woz).

Fred. the Great

Has anyone heard RW talking about his interest in Frederick the Great? There's a fascinating book by James Gaines, Evening in the Palace of Reason, about the 1747 encounter of Bach and F the G in Potsdam. It's particularly good on the battle between the sacred and the secular as it relates to music. Any of you read it? Come on. I know there are some grown ups out there. You can't all be Harry fucking Potter readers!

Louis Schwadron's Two Minute Mitzvah

Was strolling along the Internet this morning when I came across a work of genius created by Rufus' French horn impressario, the beautiful Louis Schwadron. As Rabbi Yoni Goldfarb says, "No matter what pair of slacks you're wearing, there's always a pocket of time to make nice." As my own two minute mitzvah (an act of kindness), I advise everyone to check out http://www.jewcy.com/tags/louis_schwadron (and then check out the other two installations).

And remember, it is better to have klutzed and shplotzed than never to have klutzed at all.

Rufus in Italy

I have just come back from Italy where I went to see Rufus concert in Rimini. I really felt bad for Rufus and the band as there were 200 people at the most (and this is probably an exageration) but it was a dream come true for me as it was like being part of a selected few he chose to sing for. He was great (and according to a band member he had a cold and was not feeling too well) but I think they really had a great time. I could have gone to the Vittoriale last night as well but some family engagements kept me from it......I really hope he had a larger audience there. I feel so lucky and I think Sunday night will stay with me for a very long time. I just had to share it with you as I'm sure you'll understand!!!!

Meet up in London - 28th July

I wasn't really sure where to post this, but it's sufficiently long enough now for us (in the UK) to be suffering from PRD. Therefore, is anyone free for a meet up on the evening of the 28th July? C'mon, you know you want to! ;-)
We can talk about whereabouts and what time when we have more of an idea of how many of us there will be.

Don't be shy - all are welcome. Come on in! :-D

Rules and Regulations VIDEO

Where is the thread for RULES AND REGULATIONS VIDEO?

Comments (2)

Hmmm . . . Guess this settles the question

If you read the fine print accompanying the video on Youtube, here is what it says:

"Dave and Ruffus

My mate Dave with his hero Ruffus Wainwright. By accident, me and Dave, the two biggest Ruffus fans in Ireland, just happen to end up out on the town with the man himself. Many pints and JD were had :) The most surreal night of our lives and a whole lot of fun!"

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZjK6U6Brixg

"Ruffus"?

Interesting that the two biggest Rufus fans in Ireland apparently can't even spell his name. Once is a typo, twice, maybe, but three times wrong?

Apparently Juno Falls is a musician and aspiring filmmaker (not apparent from the video, I'm afraid), but I wasn't too reassured with the lesbian make-out videos sitting on the same video site along with the Dave and "Ruffus" video . . .

Interview on MuchMusic?

Hello, darlings!

So, last Tuesday, after the second Toronto show, I just so happened to give Rufus a scarf I'd made for him, which was in a giftbag. Then, after the Montreal show on Thursday, I asked him if he'd had a chance to open his gift. And he said, yeah, he'd worn it on TV!

... which is about the most exciting thing to happen in my entire life, no exaggeration whatsoever.

Naturally, I asked what he'd worn it for, and he said he'd worn it for an interview for MuchMusic.

Which brings me to this topic:

Does anyone know anything about a Rufus interview on MuchMusic? And if you do, any clue as to when it'll be playing?

I've already emailed MuchMusic about it, and am checking RW.com quite compulsively, but I figured if anyone would know anything, it'd be you lot.

Thanks so much in advance!

Cyndi Lauper/True Colors Tour for HRC/Video

This video just came into my box from the Human Rights Campaign which is the organisation the proceeds from Cyndi Lauper's True Colors Tour will benefit. As you know, Rufus has been a part of this tour in the places where he has been able to fit it into his pre-existing schedule (eg Boston last weekend).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOqlrHgrSgc

Please watch this video--it really will give you chills. And please, if you are American, write your senators and urge them to pass the Matthew Shepard Act. This is hugely important and in doing so we help support Rufus in his political as well as his musical mission.

Thanks!!!

Rufus should go on Graham Norton's show

I've always thought they would be a perfect fit together. I know that Graham's show will be finishing soon in the next couple of weeks. But if there is a second series later this year towards Christmas, he should make a guest appearance on an episode. Probably to promote the Judy Garland CD.

Favorite b-sides!

In the spirit of the favorite songs on each album thread, I think we need a favorite b-side/rare/live songs thread. For this thread you can pick songs from soundtracks, demos, guest appearances, rare songs, or a really special live song that you love. Let's try to keep it at a minimum of twenty, but really you can do as many or as few as you like. For my list I'm choosing twenty, and they are most definitely not going to be in order, so don't worry about that. Have fun!

1. The Origin of Love
2. Hallelujah
3. Instant Pleasure
4. I'll Build A Stairway to Paradise
5. The Maker Makes
6. Everybody Knows
7. Chelsea Hotel No. 2
8. Patience is a Virtue
9. Cowboy Song
10. Lowlands Away
11. A Bit of You
12. In With the Ladies
13. Ups and Downs
14. Complainte de la Butte
15. What Can I Do? (with Antony)
16. Es Mus Sein
17. Velvet Curtain Rag
18. More Wine (with Julianna Raye)
19. Ashes
20. The Money Song

Meet & Greet Rufus ?

Hi,

I wrote to Rufus' manager to be able to meet Rufus at least briefly either at Werchter Festival or at Gröningen in order to give him a little present me and my boyfriend wanted to offer him.
Unfortunaltely, I received a mail telling me that Rufus won't be doing "any greet and meet during this tour".
Do you know if Rufus usually pauses after his shows in order to sign autographs or whatsoever ? I know there are artists who are quite nice with their fans - such as Nick Cave for example - and other ones who are quite reluctant to do so.
Has anyone an idea as regards as Rufus ?

Thanks !

Thomas

Mr W has a way with words, and reading all the wonderful posts on these forums its pretty clear that a lot of fans do too. So I thought I'd set up this forum to give us a chance to put down some of our lyrics/art/poetry to share with each other.

I am going to start you off with a short poem about a tattoo, and will sporadically add more as and when... It's called 'You have a tattoo'

You have a tattoo
In a swirl and a dot
Over your shoulder
And if I was bolder
Which I am not
I'd have one too.

Rufus wainwright on Perezhilton.com!!! Dead Serious!

I almost had a coronary when i saw his pic on the trashiest guilty pleasure site ever Perezhilton.com...How cool is it that the epitomy of popculture, being a site like this one, at least acknowledges Rufus' existence. Awesome that his name's out there, i don't care where's it's printed. Here he's having a go at Beyoncé's music, which I actually like for it's simpleness but obviously Rufus disagrees with me:

here's his interview, above the interview there was a pic of rufus with this quote: "I'm really sick of Beyoncé. All of her songs are formulaic"

You know what, i'll just enclose the pic :)

An excerpt from Rufus Wainwright's new interview in Spin magazine:

Spin: Are you sick of cult success?

Rufus Wainwright: I wouldn't say that I'm sick of it. I go to the opera three times a week, I hang around in my bathrobe reading Susan Sontag, and I get foot massages from my German boyfriend - I'm going to be fine. That being said, I want to be part of culture. I'm scared of what young people are being force-fed. I'm sick of trash culture.

Anything specifically?

I'm really sick of Beyonce. All of her songs are formulaic and produced in a way that's utterly mesmerizing in the basest way. There's no enlightenment. Like most mainstream pop these days, it's more of a scientific experiment than an artistic experience. But hey, it's your life, you know?

You beat an addiction to crystal meth. What do you think about artists like Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse who seem to turn their substance abuse problems into part of their appeal?

I just can't fathom that for myself. I was so unhappy and confused and in grave danger, really. It's very sad. It's rock 'n' roll in a fun way, but it's also hell.

Do you read PerezHilton.com?

I think Perez actually likes me, which I don't want to change. So please be kind.

What do you think of him outing closeted celebrities on his website?

Well, it's important for famous people to be an example for gay teens. But if they stay in the closet, they're going to make a lot more money. I go to the same gym as Anderson Cooper. When I look at him lifting those five-pound weights [laughs], it makes me think, "He's just trying to live his life and be all that he can be." But he still goes to the gayest gym in New York.

lol, snap!

Rufus on The Hour tonight on CBC TV (Canada)

As per the News announcement on this board, Rufus will be interviewed by George Stromboulopolis (spelling?) on CBC at 11p.m. tonight June 12.

I'll record it but won't be able to see it or convert to mpeg before I get back from Montreal. If no one else has posted it, I will when I get back.

Rufus on iTunes

Does anyone in the Rufus management have any influence with iTunes. You guys in the US have access to different tracks to us in the UK. Unless I get a credit card billing address in the US I can't complete my Rufus catalogue. I would really like to get Across the Universe, My Funny Valentine and the Aviator and Stormy Weather tracks. Anyone know how else to legally download these without me having to relocate?

Have to say I'm a bit dissapointed at the lack of gigs up here this year.

Baby pic of Rufus in "Knocked Up"

Hi peeps,
I saw a matinee of "Knocked Up" the other day (not worth the matinee price). Loudon did the music for the movie and he also has a small role as a gynecologist. During the end credits, the movie makers post baby pictures. Loudon contributed the pic of baby Rufus in the guitar case. This is not worth the price of admission, just an FYI to watch the credits when you catch it someday on cable.

5 November 2005
WRIGHT ON TIME FOR FAME GAME

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT comes from a famous musical family but wants to be a success on his own terms.

By Paul English
THE last time that Rufus Wainwright played in Glasgow he turned the Royal Concert Hall into a scene from an X-rated movie.

Two thousand fans were gobsmacked as the Canadian singer and his band stripped down to their underwear and gyrated semi-naked around a strobe-lit stage to the tune of An Old Whore's Diet from Rufus' last album,Want Two.

The backing singers harmonised in bras and knickers.

The percussionist donned S&M leathers and cracked whips.

The New York singer wore a Miss Glasgow sash, ruby slippers and hot pants.

It's fair to say the hall had never seen anything like it. Nor hadmany of his fans.

But the clean-upculture brigade can relax.

There's no chance Rufus will be flashing his kecks whenhe plays the city's Armadillo next month.

He doesn't wear kecks, you see.

The 32year-old, in the UK to perform with Burt Bacharach on Later... With Jools Holland, stretches his legs out on the couch of his hotel in London, and says: "I never wear underwear. I just kind of forget to put it on."

Going commando isn't the only Scottish trait he has picked up.

He's also been known to turn up for gigs clad in ill-fitting tartan trousers.

But he's moved on from the tight trews. "I actually bought a kilt recently," he says.

"But I tried it on and don't look any good in it.

"I didn't wear that sack thing the guys wear at the front though, and I ended up looking more like a chubby schoolgirl."

Yet it's not his foppish fashion sense or Sharon Stone sensibilities that have seen Rufus become one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters of his time.

The offspring of folk singer Louden Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Rufus (and sister Martha) has an undoubted musical pedigree.

His songs are meticulously crafted "tapestries" (his word), musically rich, emotionally frank and critically acclaimed.

His UK tour is almost a sell-out, he's lauded across the world, counts Sting, Elton John, Keane and Leonard Cohen as fans and has released four albums.

Despite this, he speaks with a barely-disguised envy of more successful contemporaries. "James Blunt and I were sitting at the same table for a while," he says, figuratively speaking.

"He is a very handsome, charming and endearing character, but it has been infuriating to watch his rise.

"And I remember when Jake Shears from The Scissor Sisters first played me his demo. I told him not to be surprised if it takes a few albums to be recognised. Don't be disheartened, I told him."

Thanks to the flyaway success of their debut albums, Blunt and Shears are stadium fodder, while Rufus contents himself with mid-sized venues.

"But I've learned to wish everyone the best," he says. "I only have positives for everyone. My time will come."

Some would say it already has. His four albums - Rufus Wainwright (1998), Poses (2002),Want One (2003) and Want Two (2004) - haven't spawned hit singles, but they've seen him establish a solid fanbase.

He's also contributed to movie soundtracks including Shrek, I Am Sam, Moulin Rouge and Zoolander, and appeared in last year's Leonardo Di Caprio flick The Aviator.

His record sales might not rival Mr Blunt's but they're steady enough to keep him in the game, despite rumours of a $1m dollar debt.

He says: "Regardless of what happens to these people down the road, I know the foundation I've built is as wide and solid as a pyramid. Maybe not as high."

His pal Antony Hegarty, singer with this year's Mercury Award winners Antony & The Johnsons, first came to prominence after appearing on Rufus' last album.

It's perhaps another slap in the face that having given a mate a leg-up from relative obscurity, he then went on to win a top music industry award.

But Rufus reckons there's no rhyme nor reason to success. He says: "The more I'm in this business, the more I realise it's all about events that have nothing to do with logic.

"There's no way to secure success logically with the record industry.

"It's a real gamble where there are no odds, it's just like casting dice into the universe and them never coming back. But that's kind of interesting."

It's been every bit as interesting for sister Martha, whose debut album received rave reviews this year.

Since its launch, she's gone from being her big brother's backing singer to internationally fancied songstress in her own right.

"She's done amazingly well," Rufus says. "It's really fascinating to me. There were moments years ago when everyone thought she wasn't going to make it. But a lot of her frustration has paid off - it's propelled her to where she is."

All this magnanimous chatter might well be good karma, but Rufus gets as many plaudits as he hands out.

"There was a time not too long ago, where I needed the attention of my peers," he says.

"David Bowie sent me an email saying he thought my latest album was fabulous and I was getting better and better. But really, you're only as good as your last song, and more often than not your last song is faulty, so you just have to soldier on.

"Leonard Cohen has always been very vocal about my albums being over-produced. I really appreciate his concern, and it's something I've been thinking about for my new record.

"I would never make a record like The White Stripes or Franz Ferdinand, but I like this looser, off the cuff feel they have. I'm learning from that, because I only really got into popular music in the last four years. I was purely an opera fanatic before, and still am mostly.

"But this is a kind of education, trying to stay as true to

Let's Get "Going To A Town" on VH1!

Not sure if you all know but every week you can go to VH1.com and vote for your top 20 videos (which is then shown on Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. EDT).

Rufus' video isn't up there to click and drag into the list, however you CAN write in your own submission. If enough of us do this, maybe "GTAT" will end up there for more people to click and maybe we can actually get the video to #1!

I didn't know where else to go to try and get this ball rolling. So how about everyone here do it and spread the word to others as well.

Let's make GTAT the #1 video on VH1!

Here's how you do it. Go to VH1.com then from the pull down menus click on Music and Top 20. Then click on "Vote". Then go down to where it says Wildcard and you can type in the Artist and Video name and submit. (I always submit it in the #1 spot).

RUFUS' STAR IS SHINING BRIGHTER
razz pop Darkest days of mum's illness over for singer
By Paul English
FINALLY achieving recognition, singing with Neil Tennant and hanging out with Brandon Flowers - none of it mattered when Rufus Wainwright learned his mum had cancer.

The 33-year-old was working on his new album when Kate - one half of folk greats The McGarrigle Sisters - fell ill.

At that moment his priorities drastically changed.

He said: "It was the most horrific experience of my life. I was in Europe and she was in Canada.

"It makes you realise that you can work as hard as you can on yourself and your dreams, but the minute someone close to you is threatened, the agony is 20 times bigger.

"But that's a life lesson we're all going to go through."

The cover of his fifth LP, Release The Stars, now carries the pledge: "This album is dedicated to my mother who still whispers in my ear that I'm great."

Rufus added: "She's just had a major operation and she's doing well."

His other great news this week was that his latest work seems to finally have broken him into the mainstream, entering the midweek album chart at No.3.

Until now, the New York-born Canadian's music hasn't been typically chart-troubling - it's lush, textured, exuberant.

His previous albums did, however, meet with passionate reviews and a growing fanbase.

Rufus dug deep in to his personal life on 2003's celebrated Want One - especially about his relationship with his sometimes-estranged singer father Loudon Wainwright III on the heartbreaking Dinner At Eight.

But he refused to use emotions about his mum to fuel his work.

He said: "That is something way beyond any artistic thing."

But there was plenty else aside to inspire his latest work.

New single Going To A Town - which he performed on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross last week - is a barbed lament to his homeland's failings.

His most successful single to date, having broken the Top 20, it nods to the New Orleans floods, homophobia and the war in Iraq.

Rufus said: "Even if you're a conservative, you can't fail to notice things have gone dreadfully wrong.

"I think we're just holding our breath and getting ready for the next elections."

Our politics feature on his radar, too.

He said: "I heard about what happened in Scotland with the 150,000 spoiled votes and I felt really sorry for the people."

The album is also full of references to Berlin, where he met his new partner Jorn, part of the Berlin Opera

He said: I'm thinking about relocating there. It's cheaper and a great city."

It also touches, on track Tulsa, on internet rumours of an encounter with Brandon Flowers - who is married with a baby.

The song suggests the Killers frontman "tastes of chips".

So what happened?

Rufus insisted: "Nothing. We were in town at the same time. We had a drink and swatted off insane fans."

"I guess it's me trying to maintain a childhood fascination with celebrity and Brandon was the candidate that week.

"I've never said anything other than I hope he appreciates me.

"I'm sure we'll meet up along the way again - he'll either deck me or kiss me on the cheek."

Before that showdown, Rufus has a packed schedule.

He has been commissioned to write an opera for the New York Met yet has plans for a full UK tour before 2008 - including this year's T in the Park.

He's already played a string of dates in London, including his take on Judy Garland's famous 1961 Carnegie Hall concert. But, as always, family remains at the heart of much of his work. His track Want claims "I want to ... work at the family store".

And on Release The Stars he again sings with his sister Martha (as well as guest slots with Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant and Teddy Thomson).

However, her growing success makes it unlikely she'll back him as she did on his 2005 tour.

Rufus said: "We're officially separated now in terms of our careers. Maybe only if we perform with The McGarrigles."

And his mother's illness has encouraged him to continue healing things with his dad.

He said: "Since my mother was ill, I have a new appreciation for anyone in my life who is alive, and loving the living."

Of his other sister, Lucy Wainwright-Roche, who toured with his dad, he said: "She's a great singer. Look out world, here's another Wainwright."

We're ready - there can never be too many ...

Rufus is on C4's Transmission, tonight at 11.40pm. Release The Stars is out now.

Rufus' Guitars

I have heard and seen Rufus using different guitars in performances. I'm assuming they're ones he owns personally. Can folks bring together information to identify these guitars? Their history woud be fascinating to me (and hopefully other people!), as well as maybe the special tone or sound qualities they bring to Rufus' songs.

One example is this. In the Radio 2 promo of RTS, Rufus played an electric guitar he referred to as "the Pam Love, because inside it's scrawled with, like a fire, Pam Love - nobody knows why" - a 1957 gibson.

Across the universe

Hi all
How can I get my hands on a copy (CD or MP3) of Rufus's Across the Universe? I love it and I can't seem to find it anywhere apart from on Youtube. I can't download anything onto this computer as it's a work computer, so ideally I'd like it on CD or to somehow get it onto my ipod. (iTunes don't have it).
Any ideas?
Thanks

Get Rufus to number 1

HI im gareth im using my mums account. So as all of you are no doubt quite miffed about- rufus has not quite been rewarded for his talent iam in closing his wikipedia page that has all the staitstics -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rufus_wainwright. If you have been to one of the dates on his most recent tour or are going to the one in london he will probably mention the fact that his next single is rules and regulations. Now we are doing something similar on the muse forum to get there track to no.1. but i feel that rufus deserves this more. so i know its a bit cheeky but if we really wanted to we could buy several copies of the new single in an effort to get him to the charts.saying that i dont actually know how many memebers there are in the rufus forum:p

CENSORSHIP ON THE NEW BOARD

If we visit a thread on Sunday (and spend time composing a thoughtful post) and when we return on Monday to see what new ideas have been engendered, we find that the entire thread has completely disappeared...

Have we followed the White Rabbit through his hole and landed in Gulagland?

These threads with lively and interesting discussions:

"Does RTS Dissappoint You?"
"RTS is His Worst Album Yet"

Are missing today

But what bothers me is:
Will unfavorable posts be removed without our knowing?

Are we only supposed to say NICE things about the songs?
Can there be no negative personal opinions?

I can understand the Administrator removing foul language and cruel, rude and disparaging remarks about other posters (or even Rufus or homosexuals, etc).

But just saying you don't like an artist's latest work seems within the realm of reason on an message board.

PLEASE Administrator
Post guidelines for us, now.
And instructions on how to post pictures, etc.
I'm getting really tired of wasting my time here.

What do YOU GUYS think?
