Which album should I start with?

So, I've never really heard a Rufus Wainwright song in my life. But I have the performance he did with Ben Folds of Careless Whisper and I absolutely adore it. I wonder if any of you could point me toward an album that I should look to buy?

Can I hear it!

I would love to hear that song. Does anyone know if it is anywhere on the web, or even available for download (will pay!)

All the albums are so good, it is hard to choose just one. I like "Want One" and of course "Release the Stars" They are quite different, but will give you an idea of his style.Many others on this Board will be able to give you good advice as to what to buy!

Found it!

I have just found Careless Whisper after a google! It's lovely, it has always been one of my favourite songs. I wish I could have seen them perform it. It sounds as if the audience were extremely appreciative, as is to be expected with two such great singers!

you've never heard a rufus song? my gosh you're in for a treat!!!!
my answer to your question: buy them all! lol.

no but seriously wow what a question. hehe i'm all flustered thinking of what to suggest! it's so hard! each album has great stuff. then of course there's the covers of songs that he's done which are just fantastic as well.
maybe start with Poses? or Want One or Want Two? or if you want to jump headfirst into the the opulent orchestrations you could get Release the Stars and work your way backwards. man i'm so unhelpful aren't i? haha
well whichever way you choose to go, it's all good! happy listening! Rufus is amazing!!

hi Diana: if you haven't seen them already, there are a couple of videos on youtube.com of CW with Rufus and Ben, but none is ideal. The one with 5 stars used to be the best, but now it's unsynchronized and annoying to watch.

Here's one--sounds not bad, visuals very blurred, but visible . . .

I too love this duo . . . makes me swoon when Rufus hits those high notes, esp the climax of the song in duo with Ben. ;)

Lovely!

Aww...thank you musicbaebe. That was just beautiful. I wish he would do a duet like that at one of his shows. I must say YouTube is a real find for some of his performances!

Nimrod, sweety,

I started out by hearing the NPR Interview with Ruf by Scott Simon.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5475107

As I listened, I thought to myself "WHO is this absolutely lovely voice, funny, gay, and yet strong as steel, going to revive the Judy Garland Carnegie Hall concert??" As I listened to a few excerpts, I fell in aesthetic love (eh?). I could not believe that I had not heard of this guy sooner. Don't know why. So I went to good old Amazon and started searching.

When I found the song Danny Boy, I absolutely was stunned. STUNNED. I didn't know Rufus Wainwright, but he knew the insides of me.

So, my dear, let me suggest a few titles:

Want Two is where I started (since it was the most available) and then Want One. Get the Want Two CD with the DVD and then you can watch him in action. Also, get the All I Want DVD produced at the same time.

* Art Teacher
* This Love Affair <-- I cried the first week, since this is what I was doing as well.
* Memphis Skyline
* Gay Messiah

Then you can either go backwards or forwards.

* Rufus Wainwright (Debut)
- Foolish Love
- Danny Boy

* Release the Stars
- Going to a Town (I am from the US, but I love it!!!)
- Tulsa (I experienced this...

Then, if you are ordering online, you will get Poses and Want One, and all the rest, and by that time you will get the Carnegie Hall album, and you will be up to your ears for several weeks, if not months.

Howzzat? :D

Re:

Thanks heaps for the advice everyone. Next time I'm out I'm going to make a special effort. I'll let you know which one I buy.

About Careless Whisper.. I have a DVD of Ben Folds' set at Summerstage 2004, and that is how I've seen/heard that song.

First Album

if you can, listen to the albums in chronological order
otherwise, pick up POSES as soon as possible!

then Want One, then Release the Stars (chronological order)

I'd suggest...

... since you seem to love Ben Folds (so do I ;) ) you should start with Poses.

And if you heard one, you will stand in the cd-shop again the next day to buy them all.

That's how it went with me. I heard from him (cause he was touring with Ben), went and picked up Want 2. The next day I had all of his 4 albums.

I agree. When I got the first album, I wanted every subsequent one. It's contagious! I also look out eagerly for his performances in the UK. We are lucky that he comes here so often! He will be on TV this week (hopefully). It is T in the Park from Scotland. I am hoping they show more than one song. I am still enjoying his Glastonbury set.

Which album should I start with?

why not just start at the beginning and work your way through?
Rebel Prince

The beginning...

I'd say start at the beginning... take the journey
rufusjetaime

Hmmmm

Want One was the first album I bought. I think it's a good place to start; Rufus himself has said that it's his most accessible album. I really enjoyed going back then and seeing the progression from it, how his voice has developed, music etc...! Now I've all the albums and am tracking down all those soundtracks he did!!!!!! No matter what, just listen carefully and enjoy!

recommendation

I think Rufus' first album is his best, but Poses is probably the best introduction.
