This is obviously one of Rufus most beloved numbers. It is like you say simply brilliant. And also without looking into it more deeply I would say one of his most triumphant or 'happy' songs. The horn section, the banjo, the whole cabaret thing going on is well arranged, and the lyrics are beautiful.
A modern classic. Worthy of any of the great songwriters of the 20th Century. Beautiful arrangement and wondeful melody. It was my favourite on the album for a long long time. (I Don't Know What It Is eventually wound it's way into my heart and mind above all others). This could, and should have been a massive hit. But that doesn't really matter.
this is the last album of Ru's that i bought. i just got it 2 days ago. wow. love this album!! as much as RTS. fabulous songs...14th street should have been a HUGE hit for Rufus. this song has everything a hit radio song has. i don't understand how rufus isn't on the radio. just because he's gay and had a drug problem really isn't that big a deal in the music biz, is it? is it because he is honest, to a fault? everyone should listen to his music.
"You got my lost brother's soul, my dear mother's eyes, A brown horse's mane, and my uncle's name"
Does Rufus really have a "lost brother"? Or is he being poetic, and am I taking things too literally? I ask because I once read an article that mentioned in passing that Kate 'lost a baby' between Rufus and Martha. But just because it's in the paper doesn't mean it's true....
Just curious. They're such great lyrics, so poignant.
