You who were born with the sun above your shoulders, You turn me on, you turn me on, you have to know You who were born where the sun she keeps her distance, You turn me on, you turn me on, but so does she
You who were born there where beauty is existence, You turn me on, you turn me, your body heals my soul You who were born where you shiver and you shudder, You turn me on, the girl is gone so come on, let's go
All the pearls of China, fade astride a Volta Don't sew beelines to anybody's hide, Save your poison for a lover who is on your side
One way is Rome and the other way is Mecca On either side, on either side of our motorbike One way is home and the other way is Papa On either side, on either side, and prepared to strike When I get back I will dream in Barnes & Noble's Oh, leave me here, oh leave where angels fear to tread When I get back, I will bleed after my beating Don't leave me here, don't leave me here, I'm scared to death
All the pearls of China, fade astride a Volta Don't sew beelines to anybody's hide Save your poison for a lover who is on your side All the pearls of China, fade astride a Volta Don't sew beelines to anybody's hide Save your poison for a lover who is on your side
I adore this song. The counter-rhythm set up in the beginning - by an insrument I can't identify - is then taken over by the drums. I especially love the dobro. The lyrics are so poignant.
I love the mood of this song. "Poses" was the first Rufus album that I got - my sister bought it for me for Christmas after I asked for "anything you can find" by Rufus Wainwright. I had seen an article about him in Rolling Stone about his then recent stint in rehab. I remembered having saw him a few years earlier in that Gap commercial. Once I heard how great he was on "Poses" I regretted not having found out more about him sooner.
I love the woozy hazy feel of this song.....it reminds me a particular summer and the feelings that surrounded me while this song played. A beautiful Rufus song.
Okay, can anyone tell me what a Volta is? I just give up. I have found that there was a 17th century Italian named Alessandro Volta that discovered some kind of battery energy. There is a minor Roman God named Volta. There is even some kind of a comic book character referred to as Voltaman or Voltamen. I just gotta know. Can anyone help?
"The custom, known as “Volta”, literally a Greek word for a walk, has since ancient times, been more often associated with what North Americans would call strolling or making the rounds. "
This is one of my favourite songs on "Poses".

This is one of Rufus' songs where I've never taken the time to decipher the lyrics (quite often they're not that clear to me!) so I just sing along regardless making the same sounds as he does but without the foggiest idea of what I'm singing! I love it!
