I was in New York in April and I went to see a musical called Grey Gardens which was based on the same documentary that the song was.. It's about a cousin and an Aunt of Jackie Kennedy who used to live a fabulous life in New York (The Hamptons I think) in the 1940s and by the 70s the house (Grey Gardens) was totally run down, they were destitute and the health authority wanted to shut down the place.. amazing what they write musicals about but it was fab! She even says the line 'its very difficult to keep the line between the past an the present - y'know what I mean'. (I nearly jumped out of my seat when I heard it!). Rufus took this startight from the original documentary
