Though I'm impressed with just about everything Rufus does, this song is one that really, really touches me. Kate's an amazing woman, and I'm happy Rufus wrote this for her.
I really fell for this song when I watched the Rufus DVD and saw what Kate had to say about it. She said how the line about her round face and long hands made her cry.
Someone else commented that they'd never heard a lovesong that someone had written about their mother before and thinking about it - neither can I.
I love both this and Dinner at Eight and often think how vastly different they are. I know R was v angry when he wrote DAE but they both ultimately convey a similar message about his feelings regarding his parents and theirs about him I think.

I know Rufus loves both his parents very much,he has said he still has issues with his dad,but at least they are now reconciled, and he loves his mother to bits, she was and still is very much there for him no matter what.
I always think tho' of the line in 'Want' where Rufus sings...'just want to be my dad with a slight sprinkling of my mother'.My heart bleeds for him when I hear him sing those words, although it was some time ago when he wrote it,but the meaning is so powerful.

I always found that line a little confusing and also v touching.
RW has made no secret of the fact that both of his parents had difficulties in accepting his sexuality and a number of lyrics hint at this, particularly Beauty Mark where he sings about him not being so manly but how his mother still loves him.
I get the impression that Kate reacted much worse than Loudon did at finding out about Rufus' sexuality but that Kate and Rufus have got 'over it,' I suppose. They are clearly v close and adore one another. I love the RTS tribute to Kate which says that the album is dedicated to her and that she "still whispers in my ear that I'm great".
I get the impression that Rufus and Loudon's relationship is v different but that that stems from him perhaps not being around so much in the early days rather than as a result of R's sexuality. I think that comes across v strongly in Dinner At Eight. I also think it comes across in some of Loudon's stuff too ('A father and a son' etc)
I have only ever heard Rufus speak glowingly of his family - tis v moving.
PS: Pls excuse typo in previous post re: 'red face.' Twas late..... :-)
