What other bands or singers do you like? I would highly recommend the band Guggenheim Grotto, their website is www.guggenheimgrotto.com, but check out Told You So and Everyman on Youtube! Stunning stuff, a geady mix of folk and pop, everyone should hear them!
I think the past few years have seen a huge upswell of terrific musicians--Ryan Adams, Wilco, Gillian Welch, Martha Wainwright, Regina Spektor, to name a very few. But the artist who rewards me in the same way that the musicians I grew up with is defintely Patty Griffin. Check out IMPOSSIBLE DREAM, CHILDREN RUNNING THROUGH, FLAMING RED--she's just a deep, deep songwriter with a gorgeous voice.
And I was recently FLOORED by Brandi Carlile, whose two albums are PERFECT. And she has a voice that isn't to be believed.

I too was recently put on to Brandi Carlile (Thankyou Rebel Prince!) I was driving in my car when suddenly her voice sprung out of the speakers and floored me! She has the most supurb voice!

And, for some reason, I keep playing the soundtrack to the movie "A Slipping Down Life." All the songs are sung by the actor Guy Pearce. He's not that bad of a singer. And, it's a great movie.
I feel like I'm forgetting someone. But, I going to stop typing before I list everyone on my I-pod.
First and foremost...Kate Bush above all else then comes in Mr W a close second and then from there it spreads out in no particluar order to the likes of Tori Amos, David Bowie, Hawksley Workman, Sufjan Stevens (love Sufjan) Fleetwood Mac, Zero 7, Neil Young, Abba (The Vsitors is amazing), Joyzipper, Mazarin, Mecury Rev, Kings of Convenience... I could go on!
In fact I will, Nina Simone, Kylie, Madonna (sorry Mr W I know she's the devil) Michael Jackson, Roberta Flack, Dolly Parton, Eurythmics (not their solo efforts so much) erm...and that's it!

Shay - You are the ONLY person I've come across that knows this soundtrack and film. I own the soundtrack, novel and DVD. Love the intensity of this film and yeah, Guy's a decent singer. Bloody hot, too. Although, I think his wife needs to perhaps make him a sandwich now and then.

Came across a double album in the music shop. Someone I'd never heard of. Liked what I read on the cover, purchased it there and then on instinct. Got it home and was blown away, seriously. The albums are Prophesy and Human
The Artist is Nitin Sawhney, and his vision has climbed straight into my head. He goes his own unique way aka Rufus himself. Stunning stuff. and Seher if you read this post, I'd love some translation if you could help

THANK YOU for Imogen Heap and Sufjan Stevens! Just downloaded them thanks to all the recommendations here and now I don't know how I would get along without especially Imogen.
Have you seen this à capella-performance by her? Completely amazing:

I actully got it for the duet with Rufus of Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters. But I love the album. He has a wonderful voice, the muscians with him are mostly RW band members. The song lyric are lovely. The sound shows a strong Rufus influence, but it is in no way a copy. Jason has a style of his own.
