Blackoutsabbath 2010

Dear Blackoutsabbathers,

Your commanding Queen of Green here.

Recently there's been a lot of chatter about our hands being shackled by the climate change naysayers due to this last cold winter in the western world. I spent most of early winter in Canada where admittedly it was terribly frigid, but reports back to my Verdant Garden of Good were that the season was rather top heavy and winter went out like a lamb on antibiotics. To tell you the truth, besides the fact that on record this last winter was the 5th hottest on record GLOBALLY, I have little regard for the question of whether weather weathers or withers or whatever!!! I simply feel that a little input fixation (that's inputting it nicely, wouldn't you say?) should be reviewed, and that shutting off is a nice break from Facebook or Myspace, or in my case, the various "tubes" available for all aspects of this wondrous life. I just like the old idea of "turning off, tuning in and dropping out", without the ACID of course. I mean, think of it - CNN has basically become a 24 hour Ed Sullivan Show and BBC News bloody Masterpiece Theater!!!! (I'm showing my age aren't I? 63) News anchors are really the thespians  of our time, their ability to report on what's happening all day with a straight face is a new world wonder.

With the amount of time I spend with my Blackberry I might as well use it as a vibrating sex toy and most of my life (with touring) is spent with my internal organs hurtling forward at speeds of over 50 miles an hour......this last paragraph was a bit of an Icelandic eruption, let's move on to more serious stuff.

The Gulf oil spill. What can we say? Certainly a call to action in terms of the many evils of oil, I mean, what's the list at now? Global warming, pollution, war, bad hair, etc... Oil is definitely a good place to start when sitting, standing, or running around  (our bodies thankfully don't run on oil.....yet) while observing this 2010 Blackoutsabbath on Saturday, June 19th. Have fun!

 Love, Rufus.

Songs For Lulu – UK Competition

Rufus To celebrate the release of Rufus’ new studio album, All Days Our Nights: Songs For Lulu we have a pair of tickets up for grabs to watch Rufus perform a live tour preview of the new album.  This will take place at a secret venue in London in front of a small invite only audience on April 9th from 1-2 pm.

To win the tickets, you need to follow Rufus’ lead and write about your own alter ego or personal muse.  Much of the inspiration behind All Days Our Nights: Songs For Lulu comes from experiences and an attraction to the dark side that Rufus shares with his muse Lulu, who is herself a representation of the silent screen actress Louise Brooks.

Rufus has described Lulu as a "dark brooding feminine power" and says the album is a reaffirmation of that persona: “Highly romantic, highly unstable. I mean, what I have found is that once you give up on a life, it doesn't go away. You are always appeasing, or bargaining with, or neglecting that former self, the spirit who used to be behind the wheel, and would like to be still. I don't cross to that side of the street any more. But it is important for me as a healthy person to acknowledge that the demons are still around."

Click here to enter by submitting a piece of writing that describes your own personal muse, with the most interesting submission winning its author two highly sought after tickets to see Rufus perform in these very special circumstances. Tickets will not be sold to this event and entrants must be a UK resident and able to attend the performance on April 9th in London. The contest ends on April 2nd and transport costs will unfortunately not be covered.

All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu is released in the UK on 5th April 2010.  Pre-order your copy:

Note from Rufus

Hello all:

WARNING: THIS TEXT SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN TOO SERIOUSLY!!!!

Once again through the treacherous pitfalls of a full year have most of us made it, gasping for air and grabbing at threads in order to prop ourselves up again on the icy edge of the eternal precipice in order to repeat the thrust, and fling our fragile selves yet again down the everlasting chutes of peril. For a moment we stand, exhausted and confused with no idea of what's up or down, but still miraculously we have the insatiable drive to go on despite imminent treachery and destruction.

Obviously, as you all know, I've had quite a time of it the last few months and am still reeling from the various gargantuan events which have pockmarked my life: death, birth, opera and Obamacare are but the few iceberg\asteroids pirrouetting about my weary head. So it is with great fanfare and relief that I announce the onset of yet another Blackoutsabbath cycle, first a small intimate concert Sunday March 14th at the beautiful Park Avenue Armory (when I say intimate I really mean it: it's only Martha and I) and then subsequently down the road on the 19th of June, the official Blackoutsabbath Day 2010,  when we can all switch everything off and enjoy a day for a day, no power, only time of which there is always so little.

The program, much like the fantastic Stanford White architecture of the space, will be decidedly European. Martha will sing Piaf and I (drum roll please).............will sing the entire Berlioz song cycle, "Les Nuits d'Ete." Now, this later announcement comes with a warning - let me explain.

I don't consider this first run through of Hector's massive work as the official premiere of yet another daunting move I'm making in the world of classical music. If anything, it's a bench mark set to aid the rise of this gnarled bud that one day will see the light of day and blossom into a full blown lugubrious flower......in other words, I'm going to make a lot of mistakes.

So pop down, or most likely pop up. It's in the afternoon and hopefully we can enjoy some daring old music and not freeze to death.  Love, Rufus.

Thank You from Rufus

Dear friends and family:

Tonight I sit by the fireplace of Garden Court, the McGarrigle family ancestral home in St-Sauveur des Monts, Quebec. On one hand I am utterly devastated by what's happened to my mother, but on the other I am so incredibly inspired and in awe of the love and support our family has received from all over the world. Hearing and reading of the tremendous impact she had on so many people's lives has been truly amazing! And let me tell you (sorry, mom), this woman was no busy body! It seems that by just being herself and doing what she loved to do, be it music, bringing up her children, dressing up in amazing outfits or most importantly, having compassion for the world around her, she struck a chord (many times literally!) and the universe responded in kind. Thank you so much for all of the kind words and please know that it has vastly helped us in this tragic time.

Firstly I would like to extend a special thanks to all of her doctors who helped her along on this difficult path, especially Dr. Gerry Batist, her oncologist, Dr. Peter Matrakos, her chief surgeon and Dr. Roger Tabah, her personal physician and dear friend. Thanks so much for all you did. She trusted you guys 100 percent.

Secondly I would like to extend a very special thanks to the legions of brave nurses who cared for my mother during her most difficult periods. Without your help both she and her family would not have been able to bare the physical and emotional trials that this dreaded illness inflicts. Arguably, when it comes down to the wire, your profession is the backbone of human existence. Thank you so much for your passion and compassion.

Finally, I would like to thank the Canadian health care system as a whole, and thus the whole country for allowing Martha and I to walk away from this massive process financially intact. I live in the United States. Need I say more? I will. With the ever darkening situation brewing south of the border over basic rights of human dignity when faced with illness, actually in truth, when faced with life in general, we feel profoundly privileged, as I know my mother felt, for all the incredible work that was done up here at little or no cost. The U.S. has a lot to learn, and Martha and I will do our best to champion the magnificent Canadian way of taking care of its people. Not a perfect way by any means, just one that isn't in the way. POINT FINAL!!!! God bless socialized medicine.

Visitation at Alfred Dallaire Memoria, 1111 avenue Laurier Ouest, Outremont, QC H2V 2L3, Saturday, 30 January, 7-9pm, and Sunday, 31 January, 2-5 pm and 7-9pm .

Funeral 10 a.m., Monday, 1st of February, at the Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal, Place d'Armes.

Donations in Kate's memory to the Kate McGarrigle Fund for cancer care and research would be gratefully appreciated. Send to Kate McGarrigle Fund c/o MUHC Foundation, 2155 Guy, Suite 900, Montreal, QC, H3H 2R9, or click on http://www.muhcfoundation.com/mcgarrigle

Note From Rufus Regarding Kate McGarrigle

When inevitably I read today in the papers that my mother lost her battle with cancer last night, I am filled with an immense desire to add that this battle, though lost, was tremendously fruitful during these last three and a half years of her life. She witnessed her daughter's marriage, the creation of my first opera, the birth of her first grandchild Arcangelo, and gave the greatest performance of her life to a packed crowd at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Not to mention traveling to some of the world's most incredible places with both my sister, her husband Brad, my boyfriend Jorn and myself. Yes, it was all too brief, but as I was saying to her sister Anna last night while sitting by her body after the struggle had ceased, there is never enough time and she, my amazing mother with whom everyone fell in love, went out there and bloody did it.  I will miss you mother, my sweet and valiant explorer, lebwohl and addio. X

February/March Tour In Australia and New Zealand Cancelled

It is with deep regret that Chugg Entertainment and Gaynor Crawford Presents today announced that Rufus Wainwright’s upcoming tour will be cancelled due to an illness in the family, but the artist has confirmed that he will return to tour Australia and New Zealand before the end of the year.

Rufus Wainwright was scheduled to arrive in Australia next month to perform as part of the ‘A Day On The Green’ winery series, before a scheduled performance at the New Zealand International Arts Festival as well as two solo shows in Auckland and Christchurch. He was then scheduled to perform at Verbrugghen Hall at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for two intimate solo performances.

Unfortunately the ‘A Day On The Green concerts in Victoria and Tasmania, also scheduled to feature Paul Kelly and The Church, will no longer go ahead as the promoters are unable to secure a suitable replacement of the same calibre as Rufus Wainwright in such a short time.

Patrons holding tickets to the headline performances are advised to contact their point of purchase to arrange a full refund of their tickets. Those holding tickets to the ‘A Day On The Green’ winery shows are advised that all tickets purchased via the Internet or Ticketmaster phone line will automatically be refunded onto the purchasing credit card.  For all outlet bookings, customers are required to return to the point of purchase where a full refund will be issued.

Once Rufus’s return tour is confirmed, patrons who had secured tickets to these cancelled shows will be granted access to an exclusive pre-sale, allowing the first right to purchase tickets to the new 2010 tour dates.

The promoters and artist sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that the cancellation has caused, and hope that Rufus’ fans can appreciate the difficult and unfortunate circumstances surrounding the decision.
